So I was totally in love with the cropped cable sweater that I started a couple days ago (#14 from this fall's VK) until I got to the cable section. From the beginning, I intuitively wanted to bring the knits in front of the purls... but the pattern reads:
4-st LPC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to back, p2 k2 from cn.
After three tries and three times of knitting something that looked more like a train wreck than a cable pattern, I've learned my lesson. And that lesson, girls (and any boys who happen to be reading) is to trust your intuition. The only way to make this sweater look right is to bring the purl stitches behing the knits, thusly:
4-st LPC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to FRONT, p2, k2 from cn.
So, then I checked out the VK website and sure enough these corrections were listed:
Pattern #14, page 121
4-st LPC should read: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold in front, p2, k2 from cn.
This will create the correct crossover in the larger cable.
The smaller cable should have 4-st LC on rows 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25 as follows: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to front, k2, k2 from cn.
The smaller cable was also twisted in the wrong direction... so basically all of their instructions were F*ed up!
The caption with the picture actually says "an ideal project for knitters new to cables". If I were new to cables this would be the ideal pattern to make me burst in to tears, run away screaming, and never try cables again.
I'm no Meg Swansen, but I'm not new to cables either... so I was glad to figure out the mistake and tonight I will try with corrected instructions to make a pretty sweater.
